Mike "Triple X" E. is INVINCIBLE on Opening Night...

Mike "Triple X" E. does nearly the unthinkable by becoming the first Summit City rounder to win back to back tournaments on the same night! In the process Mike ties Derek "The Toaster" B.'s record for most overall titles with three. Mike bested a field of 12 to win his first trophy of the night and the turned around and overcame a field of 20 to take home his second trophy of the evening.

Matty B. (first tournament) and Mike "Woody" W. (second tournament) became the season's first two inductees into the "First One Out Club".

Overall it was a great tournout for the first night of the season. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Mike "The Mouth" B. and his wife Jennifer for opening up their home to us and hosting the event. Our next Poker Night will be on Saturday October 7. There will be a non points JV game at 6:00 p.m. and the Main Event (points) tournament will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. Again we will be playing at Mike's house.

POKER ETIQUETTE

Some general rules regarding Poker Etiquette to make the tournaments more enjoyable for all:

1. Act in turn. Do not fold, call, bet, raise or re-raise until it is your turn to do so.

2. One player to a hand. Don't ask for or give advice during a hand. You are not allowed to show your cards to another player. If you show your cards to 1 player then you need to show them to all players, whether during a hand or after.

3. Keep your bets and raises in front of you. Don't put bets into the main pot until all betting is done and the table is ready for the next card. This helps to avoid confusion over who bet, called, raised, etc. and also ensures that the correct amounts are placed into the pot.

4. No string betting. String betting is defined as placing an amount of chips out to bet and then reaching back for more chips. It is best to announce your intentions - "I'm going to raise another $500" - IF you don't set out out the correct amount after announcing your bet you can and must reach back for more chips and place the correct amount.

5. Shuffling. Dealer must shuffle cards a minimum of 4 times and then cut the cards for each hand.

6. Misdeals: a.) If a card is dealt face up by accident the Dealer continues to deal all of the hole cards as usual. The Dealer then replaces the improperly dealt card with a new one and the improperly dealt card becomes the first burn card. b.) If two cards are miss dealt in a hand the hands are dead and the dealer will reshuffle and deal again.

8. Raises must be equal to or greater than the previous bet. The minimum bet amount must be equal to the Big Blind.

9. Split pots. If 2 or more players tie, the pot will be split between the players who tied. If there is an odd chip, it will be left in the middle and become a part of the next hand's pot.

10. Player's chips and cards must remain on or above the table at all times.

11. Blinds go up at the end of the next hand, not during a Dealer shuffle.

12. Cards Speak: the value of a hand is what the cards show, not what the player announces.

13. Keep quiet once you are out of a hand. Don't entice another player to make a call, bet, etc. Don't ponder outloud about who might have what hand, etc.

14. Making change. It is important to make change with other players and not from the pot.

15. Moving of players. Players will be moved during the tournament to keep the tables as equal as possible. The player to the right of the dealer at the end of the hand in progress from the full table will be moved to the table that is short handed. When we are down to 9 players left at 2 tables the blinds will freeze, and they will be dealt hand for hand until we are down to 8 players and a final table.

100 points are put into a "prize pool" for each player in the tournament (e.g. 15 players = 1500 points). The points are then "paid out" on a percentage scale based on position.

"The Mouth" roars, "The Toaster" gets unplugged & a first time champion is crowned...

The Summit City Poker Club held it's second largest tournament to date this past Saturday as 24 grinders turned out for Poker Night VII. Two-time defending champ and POY points leader Derek "The Toaster" B. was hoping to make a deep run in the tournament and extend his points lead over the competition but The Toaster wasn't able to get things heated up & Matty B. unplugged The Toaster in 15th position exacting some sweet revenge as two of The Toaster's titles came at Matty's expense.

John "Brick" Wall donned the dealer's visor & became the newest member of the "First One Out Club"! Other notable early exits included Jeff "Short Haul" J. (#2 in the POY standings) in 23rd position & Chad "The Hammer" S. (3rd place finish at PN VI) in 21st position.

Making the final table were: Kevin "The Rock" H., Kurt S., Mike "Triple X" E., Kory C., Ben H., Mike "The Mouth" B., Brendon "Your Mom" B., Jordan H., Matty B. & Jim "TBD" K.

"The Mouth" made his presence known early at the final table taking down some huge pots and amassing a nearly overwhelming chip stack. Triple X was the first to depart from the final table finishing in 1oth position. Kurt S. bowed out in 9th position, Jordan H. in 8th, The Rock in 7th & Your Mom in 6th. Newcomer Ben H. made a strong showing finishing in 5th followed by Jim "TBD" K. in 4th & Kory C. in 3rd.

The Mouth & Matty went heads up for several hands with Matty ultimately muzzling The Mouth and claiming his first SCPC Title after two second place finishes. With the win Matty climbed up 5 spaces in the points standings from 9th to 4th and The Mouth with 2 second place finishes on the 2 biggest nights jumped from 5th place to 2nd place.

The Summit City Poker Club goes underground and The Hammer tries to smash the competition...

There was a change of venue at the Power House as Poker Night VI was held in the basement rather than upstairs, which according to both Mike "Triple X" E. & Shaun "The Blender" D. gave it more of a "poker club" feel with the low ceiling and the dim lighting. The field of 17 included four newcomers: Hans W., Sam B., Mike F. & Ben.

Early in the tournament Chad "The Hammer" S. crippled Jeff "Short Haul" J. and it looked as if Short Haul was going to become the newest member of the "First One Out" Club. Short Haul stayed alive through patient play and the dubious honor of being awarded the "First One Out" visor went to Jordan H. who finished in 17th place.

Everyone had their sights on defending champ and POY point leader Derek "The Toaster" B. but he was able to double up about 90 minutes into the tournament when his co-worker Hans W., playing in his first SCPC tournament misread The Toaster's play with pocket cowboys which held up against Hans' ace/6.

As the field of 17 narrowed down to 10 and a seat at the final table on the line Shaun "The Blender" D. took a stand with an A/10 off; table chip leader Matty B. made the call with a K/J. Matty paired his J on the flop & The Blender failed to make a hand & busted out of the tournament. Mike "Triple X" E. was also short stacked early in the tournament but held on to finish in 9th position and with the absence of Mike "The Mouth" B. was able to jump up two spots in the standings to the third position.

Making it to their first final table were: Brendon "Your Mom" A., Kurt S., & Chad "The Hammer" S. joining them were: Matty B., Jim "TBD" K., Jeff "Short Haul" J., Derek "The Toaster" B. & Nathan "The Dealer" T.

The Hammer took control early at the final table by knocking out Your Mom in 8th position when Your Mom moved all in on a flush draw & failed to hit his card on the river. Kurt S. was the next to bust out in 7th position followed by Jim "TBD" in 6th. With the final table down to the last 5 & staring at a short stack The Toaster's hopes of being the first back-to-back champion were looking slim as he made a stand with a suited Q/J. The Dealer made the call and flipped over his cards to reveal an A/10 off. Each player got a piece of the flop with a rainbow K/9/8. The turn card was a Q and The Dealer was unable to pair his ace on the river or make a straight with a J.

The Hammer then went to work on the competition eliminating The Dealer & Short Haul in 5th & 6th positions. With approximately 70% of the chips in play in front of him at this point it looked as if The Hammer was a lock to win his first SCPC title. Now down to 3 players and staring at a short stack once again The Toaster went all in sitting in the big blind with a mere 7/3 off. Matty & The Hammer both called & checked out to the river. The Toaster hit bottom pair on the flop but Matty & The Hammer were unable to pair their overcards and The Toaster's 3's were enough to triple him up. The Toaster then made some aggressive all ins to take down a few pots & take a slight chip lead over The Hammer.

Squeezing an A/2 off & sitting on the button The Toaster limped into a family pot & flopped the nut straight. The Toaster made a substantial bet, Matty folded & The Hammer called. With two clubs on the flop the turn card gave the board a third club & a possible flush. The Hammer checked & The Toaster moved all in. The Hammer immediately called to which The Toaster replied, "You better have the flush!" The Hammer did not have the flush & was eliminated in 3rd position.

After a couple of heads up hands against a short stacked Matty B. the Toaster was able to repeat & claim his third overall championship.

As the snow fell throughout a cold December evening The Toaster heated up the competition at Poker Night V...

Fourteen guys turned out this past Saturday for the Summit City Poker Club - Poker Night V. With current POY leader, "Handsome" Rob A. unable to attend, several rounders had their sights on making their way to the top of the leader board.

Shaun "The Blender" D. doubled up early by taking out Jeremy "The Visor" H. thus awarding him the dubious honor of joining the "First One Out" Club at his very first Poker Night.

Derek "The Toaster" B. & Mike "The Mouth" B. went toe-to-toe as well in the early rounds with "The Mouth" leaving "The Toaster" on life-support heading into the final table as the short stack with only 1025 in chips.

"The Blender", playing strong and atoning for his early exit in the last tournament, made short work of both Mike "Dead Money?" E. and "The Mouth" amassing a huge chip stack early on at the final table. But "The Toaster", with pocket Jacks, was able to double up at the expense of "The Blender's" pocket 8's to give himself a little breathing room.

Newcomer Jeff C., who came down from Lansing Michigan, made a good showing and finished in 6th position. Jordan H. in only his second tournament finished in 5th position.

"Short Haul" also found himself on a short stack early on at the final table but made an impressive comeback building a sizeable chip stack as he tried to position himself to be the first repeat champ. But those hopes were burnt up by "The Toaster".

With the blinds at 150/300 and staring at pocket 9's on the button "The Toaster" raised another 600 pre-flop and "Short Haul" made the call. The flop came up (7-Q-Q) and "The Toaster" bet 1000. "Short Haul" made the call. The turn card was another 9 giving "The Toaster", who bet another 1000, a Full House. "Short Haul" re-raised "The Toaster" all-in and "The Toaster" made the call. "Short Haul" was drawing dead on the river with a suited A-J.

"The Blender" then finished off Nathan "The Dealer" T. & "Short Haul" for a heads up match against his long time friend "The Toaster". After more than two hours of back and forth heads up action "The Blender" found himself on the short stack and moved all in pre-flop with A-Q off. "The Toaster" called with a suited Q-7, caught a 7 on the flop and avoided an Ace on the turn and the river to claim his second Summit City Poker Night Championship and climb atop the POY leader board.

A new champion was crowned and “the Blender” mixes up the POY standings…

Twenty-Five guys attended the Summit City Poker Club – Poker Night IV on Saturday October 22, 2005. It was an exciting night of poker with the largest tournament field to date.

With the most points ever at stake at a SCPC tournament current POY leader Shaun “the Blender” D. had high hopes of making a deep run and extending his lead over his rivals but instead “the Blender” went out in 20th position and the door was left wide open for a new name atop the leader board.

“Handsome” Rob, in only his second tournament, was able to take advantage of that open door and vaulted from 8th place to 1st place by taking home the trophy. Rob placed second in the previous tournament and holds a slim 12 point lead over Derek “the Toaster” B. who held onto 2nd place by making his third final table in as many tournaments.

Also moving up were Mike “Dead Money?” E., Mike “the Mouth” B., Kevin “the Rock” H. and making the biggest jump in the standings was John “Brick” Wall who went from 19th to 10th place.

Defending champion Jeff “3 hand” J. made his third final table but slipped from 3rd to 5th place. Shaun “the Blender” D. dropped down to 6th place. Chad “Peaches” S. dropped down from 4th to 7th and Jim K. dropped from 5th to 9th.

Josh K. had the dubious honor of going out first and was awarded the “Dealer Visor” joining Derek “the Toaster” B., Brendon A. and Jim K. in the “First One Out” Club.

POKER ETIQUETTE

Some general rules regarding Poker Etiquette to make the tournament more enjoyable for all:

1. Act in turn. Do not fold, call, bet, raise or re-raise until it is your turn to do so.

2. One player to a hand. Don't ask for or give advice during a hand. You are not allowed to show your cards to another player. If you show your cards to 1 player then you need to show them to all players, whether during a hand or after.

3. Keep your bets and raises in front of you and don't put them into the main pot until all betting is done and the table is ready for the next card.

4. No string betting. String betting is defined as placing an amount of chips out to bet and then reaching back for more chips. It is best to announce your intentions - "I'm going to raise another $500" - IF you don't set out out the correct amount after announcing your bet you can and must reach back for more chips and place the correct amount.

5. Dealer must shuffle cards a minimum of 4 times and then cut the cards for each hand.

6. If a card is dealt face up by accident the Dealer continues to deal all of the hole cards as usual. The Dealer then replaces the improperly dealt card with a new one and the improperly dealt card becomes the first burn card.

7. If two cards are miss dealt in a hand the hands are dead and the dealer will reshuffle and deal again.

8. Raises must be equal to or greater than the previous bet.

9. If 2 or more players tie, the pot will be split between the players who tied. If there is an odd chip, it will be left in the middle and become a part of the next hand's pot.

10. Player's chips and cards must remain on or above the table at all times.

11. Blinds go up at the end of the next hand, not during a Dealer shuffle.

12. Cards Speak: the value of a hand is what the cards show, not what the player announces.

13. Keep quiet once you are out of a hand. Don't entice another player to make a call, bet, etc. Don't ponder outloud about who might have what hand, etc.

14. It is important to make change with other players and not from the pot.

Also, players will be moved during the tournament to keep the tables as equal as possible. The player to the right of the dealer at the end of the hand in progress from the full table will be moved to the table that is short handed. When we are down to 9 players left at 2 tables the blinds will freeze, and they will be dealt hand for hand until we are down to 8 players and a final table.

The SUMMIT CITY POKER CLUB grew out of a home game that was started by a group of friends a in 2001. In late 2003, I (Derek) moved back to Indiana after living in the DC area for 7 years. My best friend Shaun invited me over to his house to play Texas Hold 'Em Poker with him and some of his friends. I was hooked.

Games were played about every 5th or 6th Friday night but due to a conflict in Shaun & I's work schedules I was not able to attend too many games during the beginning of 2004. Later that year I decided to host a poker game at my house and invited Shaun and his group of friends as well as inviting some guys that I knew. After hosting 3 Poker Nights at my house Shaun and I decided to try and invite as many guys as we could think of to hold a multi-table poker tournament.

Our first tournament was held on June 17th 2005. We have held 2 more tournaments since then and our fourth is scheduled for Saturday October 22.
